Abstract
671,572. Two-part couplings. SOC. ANON. DE TELECOMMUNICATIONS. Feb. 22, 1950 [March 11, 1949; Jan. 11, 1950], No. 4605/50. Class 38 (i). A connector for electric cables containing one star quad and with insulation and sheath of thermoplastic material comprises two identical parts attached respectively to the ends of two cables to be connected, each part comprising a cylindrical box 11 containing a loading coil 4 for one pair of the quad and having at one end a plate 14 carrying four plugs to which the wires from the loading coil and the remaining pair of the quad are connected. The other end of the box supports a base 10 to which an anchoring tube 9 is attached by a nut 26, its inner end bearing on a rubber washer 27 which forms a seal with the cable insulator 3 which passes through the tube. The cable braid 2 supported by a rubber tube 12 passes over a lead-tin-olive 13 on tube 9 and is tied to the tube. A rubber tube 30 or layers of selfyulcanizing rubber are arranged over the braid and tied to the cable sheath and nut 26. Box 11 is filled with polythene or an adhesive synthetic resin injected under pressure and a body 28 of material identical with that of the cable sheath, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, is moulded round the inner end of the box 11 and the cable end. The outer end of box 11 has a guide 19 secured by a screw assembly 22 passing through the box, said guide pressing a rubber washer 21 against the end of the box and being surrounded by a rotatable clamping head 20. The plugs on each part are adapted to interfit when the connector is assembled, hooked parts 24, and ramps on each clamping head interengaging so that when the heads are rotated relatively to each other the parts are clamped together, the washers 21 forming a seal. A modified method of securing the guide 19 to the box, wherein two short screws enter tapped studs, is also described.
