Abstract
868,532. Moulding electrical insulation. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. March 11, 1960, No. 8671/60. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXVI] An electrical conductor in wire form is insulated by passing it longitudinally through a zone defined by cooperating half mould members which move with the conductor during its passage through the zone; insulating material, e.g. polystyrene, incorporating an expanding agent being introduced into the space surrounding the conductor and heated to form a coherent covering of cellular material surrounding the conductor. Flexible polytetrafluorethylene belts 10, 11 pass over driven and idle rollers 12, 13 respectively and each belt is formed with a continuous groove 15 in its outer surface so that co-operating runs define a central passage through which a tensioned wire 17 is passed, guided at 18, at the same speed as the belt movement. Polystyrene 20, which contains a blowing agent and which may be slightly pre-foamed, is fed from hopper 19 under gravity to the central passage around the wire and is fully foamed by passage between electrodes 21 connected to high-frequency generator 22; said electrodes also serving as guides for belts 10, 11. The insulated conductor 23 may have an outer braided conductor 24 applied thereto to form a coaxial cable, and when thermosetting resin is used hopper 19 is replaced by a mixing head and the resin is dripped into the moulding space.
