Abstract

558,133. Drawing; rolling. SIMONS, A. March 16, 1942, No. 3444. [Class 83 (iv)] The thickness of a work strip &c. is reduced by drawing it through rolls 22 supported throughout their length by rolls 25 which are reciprocated axially to reduce friction. The work strip A, Fig. 3, is drawn by one of the drums 20, 24, driven by a reversable electric motor between the rolls 22 supported and rotated, at a surface speed less than that of the strip, by the rolls 25 which are driven, through gears 31, Fig. 3, spline shafts 30, and gear 35, by a motor 38. Chain gearing 57 drives a shaft 49 which, acting through a double clutch 50, Fig. 5, and bevel gearing 48 rotates a pinion 45, Fig. 2, in engagement with racks 44 attached to two frames 39 ... 41 and 139 ... 141 in which the rolls 22, 23 are mounted. The axial movement of the rolls thus produced is reversed by pins 55 in the upper rack 44 which engage a lever 54 on a shaft 53 which carries a lever 52, Fig. 5, arranged to operate the clutch lever 51. The rolls 25 and frame members 41, 141 are mounted, to slide axially in cylinders 26, Fig. 2, which can be rocked simultaneously in opposite directions, to adjust the pass, by wheels 60, worm 61 and a hand-wheel 67, Fig. 6. The worm-shaft 62 is arranged to slide axially through a distance limited by adjustable nuts 64, 66 so that, after setting, the pass can be opened, to admit the work, by moving the shaft 62 axially, by means of the wheel 67 or of a lever 65, in a direction opposite to the proposed movement of the work, this work-movement causing the cylinders 26 to rock back to the present position.
