Abstract

557,778. Cutting sheets of thermoplastic materials into cubes, granules &c. CELLULOID CORPORATION. April 1, 1942, No. 4326. Convention date, May 8, 1941. [Class 59] [Also in Groups V, IV and VIII] A heat-softened sheet of thermoplastic material is cut into ribbons, the ribbons are cooled until they are no longer soft, and the ribbons are cut transversely into cubes, granules. &c. Two examples are given:-(1) (Figs. 1 and 2). Stock 6 passing from heated malaxating. rolls 4, 5 in the form of a sheet 7 is cut into ribbons by pivoted disc cutters 8, and the ribbons are wound on a drum 15. A liner 16 is wound with the ribbons. The liner may be a thin metal band or a fabric coated or impregnated with " Bakelite (Registered Trade Mark) resin. The wheel 15 may be fastened to the floor, as shown, or mounted on rollers. The ribbons are allowed to cool on the wheel and then passed through driven feed rollers 23 to a rotary cutter 24 having transverse cutting edges 25, the liner being rewound at 17. (2) The sheet of ribbons is passed directly from the cutters 8 to the cutter 24, being cooled during its passage by blasts of cold air. The cutting into ribbons may be effected by a grooved or serrated roll pressing against a smooth or similarly grooved surface. The thermoplastic material may be a cellulose derivative or a synthetic resin. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the second cutting operation may be omitted. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
