[Class 70] [Also in Group VIII] Rubber thread or tape is made by cutting unvulcanized or partially vulcanized rubber sheets with heated cutting devices, the thread being kept in contact with the cutting device till the cut edges are vulcanized. In this way, the tendency for the individual threads to adhere to the cutting device or to one another is overcome. In the Figure, the cutting device employed consists of two parallel shafts of rotating disc blades b<1> and b<2>. The rubber sheet a is converted into threads which enter the gaps between individual blades and are removed by take-off rollers c<1> and c<2>. Other types of cutting devices used include : a grooved feed roller or conveyer band, the blades of a single shaft of disc cutters entering the grooves ; a conveyer band consisting of a number of parallel wires, the blades of a single shaft of disc cutters engaging between the wires ; a profiled cutting band passing over the rubber sheet ; a feed roller or conveyer band provided with an elastic backing, the blades of a single shaft of disc cutters entering the elastic backing.
