557,206. Free-piston compressors. PESCARA R. P. Nov. 7, 1940, No. 16223. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1939. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] An internal-combustion-operated compressor comprising opposed pistons synchronized by a crank 6 oscillable about a fixed axis and connecting-rods 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>2</SP> is arranged so that in some normal operating conditions the crank passes over its outer dead centre and has an inertia member such as a fly-wheel 7 associated with the synchronizing linkage to assist the pistons over the outer dead centre. The moment of inertia of the flywheel may be variable by parts adapted to be clutched to the crank by electromagnets. When the stroke is less than the maximum, the return stroke is effected by pneumatic cushions 81 and by the energy stored in the compressor clearance spaces.
