[Class 37] [Also in Group XL] A valve circuit (see Group XL) comprising two valves V<SP>1</SP> V<SP>2</SP> of pentode, hexode, or like type the suppressor grids of which are coupled together, the screen of V<SP>1</SP> and the control grid of V<SP>2</SP> being maintained at zero signal potential may be used for producing a polar diagram on a cathode-ray screen. For this purpose two valve pairs are used with sine waves in quadrature phase applied at the points 1. Their outputs are applied to deflecting plates of a cathode-ray tube to give a circular trace on the screen. The periodic voltage to be examined is applied at 3 to the suppressor grids of all four valves, and causes radial deflection of the trace. The valves may be enclosed in a single envelope and may have a common cathode. Alternating-current couplings such as resistance-condenser couplings may be substituted for the direct coupling between the suppressor grids or between the anode of V<SP>1</SP> and the screen of V<SP>2</SP>.
