Abstract
555,627. Hooks. SIGNALNESS, A. June 2, 1942, No. 7505. [Class 89 (ii)] Cargo sling hooks have means to prevent them from sliding down the sling during application to the load. One end of a sling 14 has an eye for engaging the hoisting hook and the sling passes through an eye 18 in a flat base 19 having a hook in the same plane as the base for engaging the eye at the other end of the sling. A projection 20 offset from the eye 18 has an inturned end to engage the sling and the eye 18 is flared at 20. When the sling engages the projection as shown in Fig. 2 the resulting distortion of the rope holds the hook in place. When it is desired to adjust the position of the hook on the sling, the rope is disengaged from the projection 20 and allowed to pass freely on the other side thereof. In a modification the base of the hook 17 is extended to form a socket flared at each end and through which the rope passes in the plane of the hook, a further extension at one side carrying the projection 20, and in a further modification the hook 40, Fig. 9, is pivoted in a bail having two sides 42 extending from a cross piece 43 and the projection 48 is formed on the back of the hook.
