Abstract

555,344. Making hollow bodies. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., BOURNE, H. K., and BEESON, E. J. G. Feb. 17, 1942, No. 2091. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XL] A hollow body of refractory metal such as tungsten or molybdenum, e.g. an electrode of a discharge lamp, is made by winding a wire of the metal required on to a mandrel of the shape desired with its convolutions close and then surface welding the convolutions, e.g. by an arc in hydrogen. The arc may be between the body and an external electrode or between two such electrodes and caused to impinge on the body by a magnetic field. Where an intricate shape is required it is wound to approximate form on a mandrel and pressed to shape before welding. The wire may extend from the body to serve as a support. The surface of the body may be finally ground. Specification 12731/00, [Class 83]. is referred to.
