Abstract

554,738. Drum brakes. FOX, H. H. Feb. 27, 1942, No. 2599. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] A driving shaft 12 having a sun bevel wheel 14 is connected to a driven shaft 13 having a sun bevel wheel 15 by a series of planet bevel pinions 21 carried by a rotatable drum 16. A pair of brake shoes 22, 23, encompass the drum 16 and are urged into frictional contact therewith by springs 30 carried by rods 29 passing through lugs 28 on the shoes. The shoes are guided by rods 25 thereon slidable in a sleeve 24 on a fixed frame 10. When the brake is engaged the shaft 13 is driven, but when the brake is disengaged the shaft 13 remains stationary, the drum 16 revolving idly. Regulatable fluid pressure remote control means which permit the spring means to gradually exert itself to bring the drum gradually to rest includes a cylinder 26 fixed at each end of one shoe and a co-operating plunger 27 at each end of the other shoe, said cylinders being connected to a fluid pressure supply system incorporating a control and exhaust valve. In a modification the rods 29 are screwed to one shoe and carry a single spring only. In another modification each shoe has a plunger 38, Fig. 4 (not shown) entering in a cylinder 36. The guide rods 25 bear on antifriction rollers 39.
