554,235. Fuzes. ASHWORTH, D. R., CHARLES, A., and SMITH METERS, Ltd. Dec. 20, 1941, No. 16446. [Class 9 (i)] The detonator carrier 6 (or needle 5) of a percussion fuze is retained in the inoperative position by a safety device comprising a stop element 11, which projects into the path of the carrier (or needle), and a manually-operated retaining pin or rod 14 which is received in a seating 15 in the fuze body and prevents the element 11 from being pressed aside. The element 11 may be a ball, as shown, or a roller, or a bevel-ended non-circular-sectioned plunger. The pin may be split" as shown, or may be screwthreaded to engage a similar bore in the fuze body, or may be screw-threadedly maintained in and lengthwise of the run-way 12. A second safety device comprises a sheet-metal cup 16 having an apertured base 17 comprising deformable tongues. A light spring 19, restraining the carrier 6, is anchored at 24 or may bear upon the cup base 17. The bore 9 may be a flash hole or may contain a priming composition or a slow-burning delay-action powder. Between the bore 9 and the fuze charge 25 are interposed a sheet-metal disc 20 and a disc 21 of linen or paper. The body of the fuze may be of thermosetting or thermoplastic material, strengthened with metal insertions.
