Abstract

554,225. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 1, 1942, No. 17067. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1941. [Class 38 (v)] An electric discharge lamp has a starting circuit including an automatic switch responsive to energizing the circuit for closing it and a second switch also responsive to energizing the circuit for closing the circuit independently and suspending further operation of the firstmentioned switch if the lamp fails to start. In the example, a bimetal strip 30 and two bimetal contact arms 25, 26 are provided. If 25, 26 close on slow discharge, and subsequently open in the normal way, and the lamp starts, strip 30 does not function. If repeated closings and openings of 25, 26 fail to start the lamp, the cumulative heating by the glow causes each end of strip 30 to close on to the nearest strip 25 or 26 and the short sircuit prevents subsequent glow. The strip 30 remains bent under the heating effect of the current therethrough. In a modification strip 30 is of inverted U-shape and makes contact with strips 25, 26 near their points of mounting. Specifications 538,072 and 542,853, [Group XL], are referred to.
