Abstract

627,052. Thermal switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and NOBLE, S. H. May 13, 1946, No. 14401. [Class 38(v)] A glow switch for starting discharge lamps comprises a U-shape bimetal 15 supported by a terminal 14 and slidably carrying a bar 16 having a contact 17, the other contact 13 being mounted on the terminal 12. On heating, the free limb of the bimetal moves outwards to engage a stop 19 on the bar 16 whereby the contact 17 is moved to engage the contact 13. The glow then ceases and the bimetal cools, but the contacts 13, 17 are not separated to start the lamp until the free limb engages another stop 18 on the bar. The delay produced by this lost-motion coupling ensures that the contacts are positively disengaged and contact chatter is avoided. A thin wire 20 may be connected between the bar 16 and the terminal 14 to make certain that these parts are at the same potential.
