Abstract
553,416. Variable pitch propellers. MILNER, H. L. Nov. 18, 1941, No. 14838. [Class 114] [Also in Group XXXIV] In high-speed bearings in which both the inner and outer races rotate in opposite directions a calibrated flow of lubricant is fed to the bearing and collected by centrifugal action in a sump, the level of the lubricant in the sump being kept at a constant level by a pump operated by the relative rotation of the races. The pump may deliver the lubricant to the supply and may consist of two radial flanges 33, 34 formed or mounted on the sleeves 19, 16 carrying the races 18, 17, flange 34 having a spiral groove 36. When applied to the pitch changing of contrarotating propellers, as described in Specification 538,621, the inner shaft 11 is hollow to deliver lubricant through passages 30, 32 to the bearing which has a seal 27 with inturned part 28. The excess from the sump 40 is returned to the shaft 11 through passages 37, 39.
