Abstract

592,947. Bearings. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., and HEPPNER, F. A. M. Nov. 1, 1944, No. 21406. [Class 12 (i)] The cage of a ball or roller bearing serves to deliver oil to lubricate the balls or rollers and also to deliver, in parallel flow, oil for cooling the bearing, the latter flow thus by-passing the balls or rollers. The invention is shown applied to a high-speed rotor mounted on a fixed hollow shaft 13 by a two-row angular-contact ball bearing 16. The fixed hollow shaft 13 contains an oil supply pipe 17 from which oil passes by ducts 24, 25 in a body member 18 protruding through the shaft 13 and also through the inner (fixed) race 12 of the ball bearing to a collecting groove 26 on the under-side of each of the ball cages 14, 15. From this groove a quarter of the oil passes to a single duct 27 opening adjacent the lower end 11a of the ball track of the outer race 11, while three-quarters of the oil passes to three ducts, such as the ducts 29 shown for the cage 15, spaced 90 degrees apart and extending through the cage 14 to open at the further edge of the cage. Thus one-quarter of the oil serves for lubricating the balls and tracks while threequarters of the oil passes merely as a cooling flow direct to a collecting space 31 receiving both the oil flows. The oil passes from the collecting space 31 by a duct 34 to a middle channel 19 on the under-side of the outer race, whence it is withdrawn by a fixed scoop, as described in Specification 592,948, projecting from the body member 18 and passes away by the hollow shaft 13. The collecting groove 26 in the cage has an abutment to compel the oil to rotate with the cage. Specification 561,246 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
