Abstract
553,408. Moulding reinforced-concrete beams &c. PENNINGTON,.A. M. Oct. 18, 1941, No. 13424. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group X] A tapered core is supported in a mould, reinforcing members are arranged around the core to assist in maintaining against collapse the walls of the cavity which will be formed when the core is withdrawn, concrete is filled into the mould around the core and is consolidated as by vibration, and the core is withdrawn before appreciable contraction of the concrete. There may be one, three or more, or, as shown, two cavities. The mould shown comprises a channel-shaped pallet 13 having a metal lining 14, upper side walls 15 held in position by dowels 16, and metal clamps 17, 18 which are tightened by means of wedges 22. The clamps 17 have arched parts 21 which constitute handles for lifting the mould. The ends of the mould are closed by pieces 23 each pierced with two holes for the reception of cores 9. The cores have a pronounced taper and do not meet in the centre, so that the resulting beam has a solid, strong centre. To assist in withdrawal of the cores, tommy-bar holes are provided in flanges on the outer ends of the cores. Vent-holes 7 in the cores admit air as the cores are withdrawn. The reinforcement comprises rods 10, 11 welded to stirrups 12, and is supported on a transverse bolt 24 which passes through the mould and holds down the inner ends of the cores. The concrete used is stiff. The beams may be laid as shown in Fig. 6 to form a floor, the inter-beam spaces being grouted with concrete. The ends of the beams may be filled with pre-cast concrete plugs. A single-cavity beam may have circular (full circle) stirrups 12.
