Abstract
813,371. Buildings. CONCRETE Ltd., and OYLER, G. July 13, 1955 [April 21, 1954], No. 11487/54. Class 20(4) In a multi-storey building each column is formed by a number of storey high sections 16, Fig. 4, joined together so that cavities 19 exist between the sections to enable beams 14, 15 to be joined thereto. The lower end of each section 16 has a rolled steel joist 30 forming a spigot which enters a recess 17 in the upper end of the adjacent section 16. A metal plate 20 resting on the lower concrete section 16 is welded to the ends of the reinforcing bars thereof, and supports the ends of beams 14, the ends of which are shown cut away, reinforcements 22 near the top of the beams 14 protruding into the cavity 19. A beam 15, extending at right angles to beams 14, has a bifurcated end 23 to enable it to pass the spigot 30 and rest on plate 20. Reinforcing bars 31 may protrude from the lower section 16 and pass out of cavity 19 just above beam 15. Notches 32 in beam 15 reduce cracking at the joint. Finally the cavity 19 is filled with concrete. In a modification, Fig. 2, a cylindrical spigot is employed which enters a cylindrical recess 17 in the adjacent section 16. Floor slabs 24 may be supported by the beams 15, the latter having elements 25 which assist in tying the concrete placed in gap 26 to complete the surface. The walls, formed of bricks or panels, are supported on the beams 14. In a modification, beams, similar to those 14, are bifurcated at their ends to embrace the spigot, the floor slabs being laid directly on these beams. The beams 15 are omitted and a floor member enters into and is supported by, the column. In a further form short spigots, formed from rolled joists, protrude from each end of the column sections and adjacent spigots are bolted together with the use of plates.
