[Classes 69 (ii) and 135] [Also in Group XXI] In an hydraulic press used in making rockets, the ram 3 is raised in jerks to tamp the powder ; when the powder has been compressed to a certain extent, the pressure on the ram is released automatically or by an operator, the drift is raised, more powder is put into the casing, the tamping tool is changed, and the process is repeated. Fluid passes from a reservoir 15, Fig. 1, through pump 14, overload valve 12, manuallyoperated valve 11 and pipe 10 to the press 2. An overflow pipe 16 connects the valves 11 and 12 with the reservoir. The pump 14 is operated by an electric motor 17, and comprises a long small-diameter piston 20, Fig. 2, an inlet valve 27 and an outlet valve 28. The valve 12 is adjustable to byepass the fluid back to the reservoir when a given pressure (indicated by a gauge 9) is reached in the pipe 10. The valve 11 comprises an inlet 36, Fig. 5, an outlet 37 and a byepass outlet 38 which is normally shut off from the fluid flow by a plunger 33 which is held depressed by the operator by means of a lever 44. The pressure may be released by the operator at any time before the pressure is automatically released by the valve 12.
