Abstract

551,899. Separating liquids. BOHLIN, K. L., and OSTMAN, J. H. Oct. 27, 1941, No. 13789. Convention date, Sept. 29. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 10, 1942.] [Class 46] In apparatus for separating oil from water, particularly bilge-water, consisting of a vessel 1, to which the mixture is supplied by a pipe 5 so that oil rises in an upper layer 12 and water passes to an outlet pipe 6, and a vessel 4, in which a portion at a time of the oil from the layer 12 is heated as by a steam coil 15 to remove remaining water and other impurities, at least one vertical wall of the vessel 4 is arranged to be cooled by a liquid cooling medium, preferably the water passing through the vessel, so as to set up a vigorous flow in the oil past the cooled wall and thereby obtain a more effective purification. The vessel 4 may be enclosed in the vessel or, preferably, form a separate compartment therein as shown. Oil is transferred from one vessel to the other through a pipe 14 fitted with a cock 13. A pipe 7 prevents the pipe 6 from acting as a syphon and the vessel 4 is provided with a safety pipe 18. The front of the apparatus is provided with observation wind dows for the vessels and a thermometer and oil draw-off cock for the vessel 4, the lower part consisting of two detachable plates to facilitate cleaning.
