Abstract

551,145. Machinery guards. MARVIN, A., and PHILBEDGE, V. J. April 17, 1942, No. 5098. [Class 80 (iv)] [Also in Group XXII] Consists in a guard for wood-turning machines particularly of the type wherein the workpiece is mounted between centres on a sliding saddle and can be moved toward or away from a rotary bladed cutter. The workpiece 8 is mounted between centres in headstock 9 and tailstock 10 on a saddle 1 which can be moved over a bed 2 by a lever 3 and linkages 5, 6. The cutter (not shown) is enclosed by a main fixed guard 7. Subsidiary movable guards 11, 12 are provided, the guard 11 being adapted to shield the cutter when the work is being centred on the device 19, and the guard 12 being adapted to cover the work when it has been advanced to the cutter. The guards 11, 12 are mounted on frames 13, 14 respectively which are pivoted at 15 and carry rollers 13b, 14b engaging oppositelydisposed cam tracks formed from a metal strip 16. The arrangement is such that on moving the saddle 1, the guards move, one up and the other down, thus counterbalancing one another.
