Abstract

544,837. Lathes. FELL, S. H., and TYSON, B. March 28, 1941, No. 4166. [Class 83 (iii)] A copying-lathe for turning profile work-pieces has the cutting-tool guided by a template rotating coaxially with the work and also by a cam rotating in synchronism with the work about a different axis. A turret 1 has a number of independent worktables 2, the upper section of the turret being adjustable to accommodate different numbers or thicknesses of work pieces which are held down by upper clamps. 3 driven in synchronism with the work pieces at the loading and machining stations by vertical shafts 4 and gears 5. The templates 7 are arranged beneath the work pieces. At the lower end of each work spindle is a clutch part 8 which when the spindle is at the loading and machining stations coacts with a clutch part 9 on a vertical spindle 17. The loading station is provided with a work-locating device comprising a plate 12 fitted with tumbler stops 14, 15 and adjusted by gearing 13. The stop 14 coacts with a pin on the spindle gear 6 when the table rotates in a direction opposite to the working direction to arrest the work in a determined position. The cutter 11. is coaxial with a follower 20 engaging the template. Both are supported in a radial arm 19 pivoted on a spindle 26 which also carries a lever arm 22 actuated through a lever 23 from a cam 24 to impart radial movement to the cutter head. The spindle 26 is carried by a frame pivoted at 27 and controlled by a pin engaging a cam groove 28 thus imparting a tangential component of movement to the cutter head. These radial and tangential movements assist in the shaping of difficult contours. The drive of the work tables is reversible so that the feed may be either with or against the cut.
