Abstract

989,529. Gear-cutting. GLEASON WORKS. Feb. 10, 1964 [March 11, 1963], No. 5507/64. Headings B3B and B3K. A tooth cutting machine comprises two cutters C-1, C-2 spaced axially on a spindle 21, a pair of indexible work spindles 42, 121 having their axes in the median plane of rotation of the respective cutters and means for moving one of the work-spindles to-and-from its cutter once for each rotation of the cutter. The cutters are rotated by a motor 23, belts 26 and hypoid gearing 28. The teeth of the roughing cutter C-1 are of increasing height and have hooked edges to cut at all points simultaneously. The finishing cutter C-2 outs on alternate edges. The blade-profiles are curved as in Specification 514,572. Slides and framings.-A work column 32 is adjusted towards the cutters by a screw 34 and clamped by bolts 35. A vertically-adjustable slide 36 carries a work-head 38 pivotable on a trunnion 43 and carrying a hydraulicallyoperated arbor. The end of the trunnion 43 is supported in an adjustable bracket 44. The head 38 is pivoted by a fluid-operated piston and is clamped by tee-bolts clamped hydraulically and by an hydraulic clamp on the trunnion. The slide 36 is reciprocated vertically in time with the cutter rotation by a cam 63 concentric with the cutter, which cam is engaged by a roller on a bar 65 carrying a further roller engaging an inclined surface on the bottom of the slide. During the pivoting movement of the head 38, the work-gear stops in an intermediate position with its axis on a line 41-1 as determined by a stop 91, Fig. 6, and a fluid-pressure operated latch 94 before continuing to the position 41-2 where it is brought to rest by a fluid-pressure dashpot device 96. The stop 91 has a coarse positioning block 114 and a fine adjustment block 92. The roughing-cutter head 123 is similar but is not reciprocated vertically. Blanks, transferring.-Work transfer means consist of a vertically and angularly movable arm 141 to move a workpiece from recieving station I to roughing station II, a similar arm 143 for moving a roughed workpiece from station II to station III, and further similar arms 144, 146, 148 to move the roughed workpiece from station III to station IV to station V, where it is finished, and finally to station VI where it is dropped into a shoot. The arms 141, 143, 146, 148 have movable jaws controlled by cams, fluid-pressure means and springs as the arms are moved. The arms themselves are also controlled by cams, fluid-pressure means and springs: thus the arm 144, Fig. 23, which carries a spring-operated plunger engaging a bore in the workpieee, is moved axially by cams 224, 225 against the pressure of a spring 219 as it is oscillated by a fluid-pressure vane motor 222. When the arm 144, Fig. 22, is swung to deliver a roughed blank to the arm 146, a pin 267 engages a tooth in the workpiece to align it for correct reception by jaws on the arm 146, which jaws have tooth-space-engaging fingers 266. The workpieces are indexed by means as described in Specification 983,976 each time a switch 271, Fig. 1, is actuated by a cam 272 on the cutter-spindle.
