Abstract

654,912. Lathe &c. drivers; steady rests; tailstocks. FELLOWS GEAR SHAPER CO. Nov. 3, 1948, No. 28537. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1947. [Class 83 (iii)] Gear-cutting.-In a machine tool, e.g. a planatary gear-shaping machine, comprising a cutting tool C and rotatable work spindles P, each workpiece W is centred by means of rollers 32, 33 and is pressed axially towards a work spindle by means of a displaceable bell crank lever 40, 41. The lever is pivoted to a bracket 42 secured to the hub 26 of a worm wheel 25, and the arm 41 which carries workengaging rollers 44 is pressed to engage the end of a workpiece by means of a spring 45 while the arm 40 is controlled by means of a cam 47 secured to the framework of the machine. The rollers 32 are mounted on a bracket 30, secured to the hub 26, provided with a notch 31, Fig. 4, and the roller 33 is carried by a spring- actuated lever 34 pivoted to the bracket so as to be shiftable between a work-engaging position and an inoperative position, the lever 34 having a second arm 34a which extends across the notch 31 in the inoperative position of the lever. Each workpiece is rotated by means of a driving stud 14, Fig. 6, carried by an adapter 13 secured to the work spindle, engaging a stud 16 provided on a dog 15 secured to the workpiece, the stud 16 being retained in engagement with the stud 14 by means of a roller 23 mounted on a spring- influenced lever 21 pivoted to the adapter 13. The latter carries a centre 12 for engaging the lower end of the workpiece. The cutting tool is reciprocated and is also oscillated when helical teeth are to be cut. The worm-wheel 25 is coaxial with a rotatable table T carrying the work spindles, and the table and worm. wheel are rotated in unison by means of a train of gearing and shafting. A finished workpiece is removed from the machine and a blank substituted therefor while a work spindle is beside the toothless gap C of the cutter. In this position, the lever 40, 41 is retracted by the cam 47 and the workpiece removed by turning it to clear the stud 16 from the retaining roller 23, displacing its upper end outwardly clear of the bracket 30 and lifting it from the centre 12. In a modification, the workpieces may be stationary in the sense of having no planetary movement and the cam 47 movable. Specification 636,995, [Group XXV], is referred to.
