Abstract

550,565. Elastic threads. SHEPHERD, T. L. July 3, 1941, No. 8394. [Class 70] Rubber or other elastic threads, tapes, ribbons &c. are rendered inelastic by applying 'to the thread &c. while stretched a coating of glue, gelatine, starch &c. and allowing the thread to relax to its rest length before the coating is set. The thread may be first covered with textile threads such as cotton, silk, rayon, worsted &c. Elasticity is restored by treatment in a scouring bath. The thread is useful in sewing elastic or non-elastic fabrics. Elastic threads T, are stretched between rollers 3, 4, passed under rollers 6 immersed in a size bath, over steam-heated rotating cylinders 9 to takeoff rollers 11 rotating at the same speed as the rollers 4. The threads are collected on bobbins 12 rotated at a speed which allows the threads to relax. Two or more coatings may be applied to obtain complete inextensibility. The coatings may be applied to the thread before it enters the hollow spindles of the machine for covering it with textile threads. Specifications 423,997, 533,777 and 545,882 are referred to.
