514,772. Yarns or cords. BRANDWOOD, J. March 17, 1938, No. 8196. [Class 120 (iii)] [Also in Groups IV and VIII] Doubled yarns or cords, suitable for use as tyre cords, are formed by doubling together single or component yarns produced as described in Specification 512,558 and, as a single operation, applying continuous longitudinal tension to the doubled yarns while still in the moist and cleared condition and during the drying thereof; to compensate for any undesired partial drying during doubling the doubled yarn may be passed through a bath of a weak dispersion, e.g., of rubber latex, before passing to the drying means. As shown the component yarns x from a beam or a number of bobbins while still moist pass under a roller 1, through tensioning devices to a roller 3, under a roller 4 mounted in a bath 5 of a weak dispersion of rubber latex, over rollers 6, 7, and between a pair of squeezing rollers 8, 9, through a drying chamber 10, through a reed 11, around rollers 12, 13, 14 and finally are wound up on a beam 15 or into cheeses; the speed of the beam 15 serves to maintain the tension on the yarns as they pass through the drying chamber. The doubling twist may be in the same directions as the carrier twist in the roving from which the component yarns were formed.
