Abstract

550,469. Seats &c. HELLER, M. Jan. 15, 1942, No. 624. [Class 52 (ii)] A structure for sitting or reclining upon comprises a main frame having a frame member pivoted thereto and a surface material extending from one end of the main frame to the top of the frame member, the angular movement of the frame member being limited in the forward or upward direction by one or more stops on the main frame whilst its rearward or downward movement is limited only by the restraint of the surface material. As shown in Fig. 1, the frame member 2 is carried on the main frame 1 by pivots 3 adjustable to various notches 6 and limited in its forward position by a stop bar 4. A reclining surface 5 is fastened to a transverse member 8 and to the top of the frame member 2. The surface material 5 limits the rearward rotation of the frame member 2. In a modification, Fig. 3, frame members 2, 14 are pivoted at both ends of the main frame, their upward swing being limited by stops 10. The reclining surface 5 is provided with a transverse member 15 pulled down chains, cables &c. 16 adjustably attached to the main frame. In Fig. 5, an upholstered seat frame 22 pivoted to the front of the main frame or engaging the frame by means of stops 23 is connected to a flexible surface 5 which passes loosely over the top of the pivoted frame member 2 and is connected thereto by springs 29. The frame member 2 is connected to the main frame by springs 25. In a modified chair, Fig. 4 (not shown), the supporting surface is attached to the top of the frame member 2 and spring tension is applied to the surface at the junction of the seat and the back.
