Abstract

550,052. Regulating oil engines ; starting and reversing. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. June 17, 1941, No. 7658. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1940. [Classes 7 (iii), 7 (v) and 7 (vi)] In fuel-injection apparatus in which a measured quantity of fuel is supplied to a pump 13, a control member, such as a piston valve 9, is arranged between the fuel pump 13 actuated by cylinder pressure, and the fuelinjection valve 22, so as to determine the beginning of injection. A spring 14 acts on the pump plunger 13 in the same direction in which the cylinder pressure acts on an enlargement 12 of the plunger. The piston valve 9 is actuated by a cam 28 and mechanism 27, 30, the roller 27 being adjusted in position by rocking, a shaft 26, so as to vary the movement of commencement of ignition. This adjustment of the roller 27 is also used for reversing, the cam 28 being arranged so as to be symmetrical about a vertical axis when the piston is at the upper dead. centre as shown. The measured quantity of fuel is supplied at 16 by a preliminary pump to an accumulator piston 18, which has a relief overflow at 24. The rocker 30 may be mounted on an eccentric pivot, the shaft 33 of which may be coupled to the starting-device so that the valve 9 does not open during the starting period. The cam 28 or valve 9 may be designed so that the cross-sectional area for the passage of fuel opens gradually.
