Abstract
549,585. Marine propellers. BRADSHAW, G., and FAIRMILE MARINE CO., Ltd. June 27, 1941. No. 8145. [Class 114] An adjustable pitch, marine propeller is lubricated by causing water to flow round the parts. The blades 1 are provided with stub shafts 2 radially mounted on a hub 3 keyed to the driving-shaft 4 and provided with pinions 7 engaged by racks 8 united with a thrust box 9 which is a sliding fit in a chamber 5 in the hub. The thrust box 9 has a race 10 and is adjusted longitudinally to adjust the blades by a sleeve I fitted with a rubber composition bush 13 and operated by linkage 14. Water is admitted at 11 a at the front of the sleeve 11, spiral grooves being provided in the bush if necessary, and passes through apertures 9a into the chamber 5 from which it escapes through apertures 9b. The front of the chamber is closed by a strainer 12a. The hub is provided with angularly set bulges 3a to provide bearings for the stub shafts and the racks are wedgeshaped in the rear and slide in similarly shaped channels. The pinions 7 and balls are of bronze, and racks 8 and races of stainless steel, or vice versa.
