Abstract
254,377. Bramson, M. L. March 30, 1925. Screw propellers.-In variable pitch propellers the centrifugal load on the blades is taken in two ways depending upon whether the rotational speed is above or below a predetermined value. Below this value it is taken by a ball thrust which renders it easy to alter the pitch, and above this by plain thrust which tends to hold the blade rigid against relative motion with the boss. The blade 3 is provided with a ball thrust race 4 acting through a spring 5 which presses on a collar 6 screwed to the boss spigot 2. At a predetermined speed, the load on the spring is compressed, and a radial movement of the thrust bearing 4, of about one-half to one-thousandth of an inch takes place, when the bearing contacts with the ring 7 and the load is conveyed by this plain bearing to the collar 6.
