Abstract
549,578. Fusible cut-outs. ASTBURY, H., and CROMPTON PARKINSON, Ltd. May 21, 1941, No. 6541. [Class 38 (i)] One or more fusible elements 22 are enclosed in grooves in an insulating carrier 28 made of a material containing urea formaldehyde that evolves arc-extinguishing gases, and may be embedded in the grooves in a powder or a cement containing urea formaldehyde. A suitable powder filling consists of urea formaldehyde mixed with quartz sand, and a suitable cement consists of urea formaldehyde resin in liquid form with a hardening agent. The groove may be of sinuous form or it may be helical on the surface of a cylindrical carrier. A high-resistance wire may be coiled or folded in the groove, or a lowresistance strip may have portions 27 of reduced cross section, the groove being formed to fit. Where perforations are formed in the strip a boss 29 may protrude from the bottom of the groove into each perforation. The ends of the fusible elements are attached to transverse strips 30 secured by rivets 25 with shoulders to engage the strips. Grooves may be formed in opposite faces of a flat carrier, and several carriers may be superposed, the rivets 25 passing through the end strips of the fuses to connect them in parallel. The superposed carriers with cover plates 47, 48 may form a prismatic or cylindrical structure to which end caps 50 with terminal brackets 55 are fitted. A vent in the cover plate is covered with paper &c. which is destroyed by the blowing of the fuse to act as an indicator.
