Abstract

549,089. Furnace atmospheres. WILSON, A. E. May 31, 1941, No. 6994. [Class 51 (ii)] A gas for carburiziiig steel while undergoing heat treatment is obtained by passing town gas over heated oxide of iron free from sulphur, drying the gas and mixing it with a diluent such as dried combustion products free from oxygen. As shown, retorts G containing oxide of iron are arranged in a furnace A and heated by a burner B supplied with gas from a pipe C and air from a blower through pipe D. By means of three-way valves H the retorts may be supplied with either town gas from the pipes C, c<1>, combustion products from the furnace through a pipe J for purging the retorts or oxygen from a pipe d2 for re-oxidizing. The town gas after treatment in the retorts is passed through pipes k<1>, K<1> to a condenser K<2> supplied with cooling water from a pipe L and then through a pipe M to a T-piece N in the pipe O leading to the carburizing furnace where it is mixed with combustion products drawn from the furnace A through pipe J<1> and condenser J<2>.
