Abstract
683,488. Gaseous mixtures. REGIENATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. March 1, 1950 [May 5, 1949], No. 5214/50. Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii) [Also in Group II] In a process for preparing a gaseous atmosphere for the cementation of steel such as described in Specifications 480,103, 481,797, [Group II], 489,177, wherein town gas and air are passed over charcoal heated to about 1050‹C., the gas or air or both are preheated in the furnace or an independent heater or by the sensible heat of the furnace gases. The air may be heated to 600-800‹C. and the gas to 300‹- 400‹C. The plant may comprise two reaction tubes 8, 9 in series and air heaters 4, 14, and gas heaters 13, 15 in duplicate, arranged to operate alternately under the control of valves 16 ... 19 reversing the direction of gas flow through the reaction tubes. As shown the air heaters are traversed by the furnace gases and the gas heaters comprise an electric heater 7 ; or the gas heaters may be located in the furnace flue, after the air heaters. Modifications include separate electric heaters for the reaction tubes and both air and gas heaters, gas heaters traversed by the hot cementation gas, reaction tubes operated in parallel with the gas flow continuously in the same direction and the air heaters being either electric or arranged in the furnace flue. In an example the product gas comprises CO 27.6, H<SP>2</SP> 32.9, and N<SP>2</SP> 39.5 per cent by volume.
