Abstract

<PICT:0952363/C3/1> A process of heat treating steel comprises carburizing the steel in the presence of a gas consisting of 99.5-98% of nitrogen and 0.5-2.0% of a hydrocarbon, the residual gas from the carburizing process being used for one or more of hardening, tempering, normalizing, and annealing. The hydrocarbon may be benzene. As shown, a series of furnaces A-D may each be provided with valved pipes 2a-2d for the addition of the hydrocarbon, and nitrogen may be supplied through a pipe 1. The furnaces may be interconnected by piping and valves and a pump 17 so that one or more furnaces may be provided with caruburizing gas and the remainder with the residual gas from the carburizing furnace.
