Abstract

549,070. Driving and steering endless-track vehicles. BOUNSALL, H. R. Dec. 3, 1941, No. 15549. Addition to 539,079. [Class 79 (ii)] Each track sprocket H of an endless-track vehicle is driven through a separate epicyclic reducing gear of which the sun pinion B is positively driven through bevel gearing A from the gear-box S, the toothed annulus K is fixed to the sprocket, and the planet carrier E is normally held stationary by a brake O. Steering is effected by slowing down the drive on the side to which the vehicle is to turn, and for this purpose the brake O on that side is released and the corresponding planet carrier E is driven through a differential gear in the required direction. In the construction shown the differential gear is driven from the gear-box S when a clutch T is engaged, and one brake O being released while the other is still applied, one differential shaft remains stationary but the other is driven and slows down the drive to one track sprocket, the other sprocket being positively driven at its normal speed. Two steering levers are provided, each acting in succession on one brake O and the clutch T. Free-wheels W are provided on the differential shafts and permit the latter to run in one direction only. Thus, the sprocket on the side where a brake O is released cannot over-run or rotate faster than the other sprocket and the defect of so-called "reverse" steering is not possible.
