Abstract

548,423. Piecing or splicing yarns. COOK & CO., MANCHESTER, Ltd., and CHARNOCK, C. J. April 7, 1941. No. 4592. [Class 120 (iii)] Apparatus for piecing yarns comprises two opposed yarn-retaining devices 16, Fig. 1, mounted on a common supporting means and actuated by a single mechanism to untwist the respective pieces of yarn held by them and after pulling off the loose ends to bring the remaining yarn ends together and to rotate and twist them in the reverse direction and thus unite the two pieces. The yam ends to be united are arranged in a channel 48, Fig. 11, on a table 33 and are secured by retaining springs 17 in the axiallyaligned slotted spindles 16 and by breaking means 47, 47a. Each spindle 16 is rotated by a pinion 18 from a train of gear wheels 19 driven e.g. by a handle from a common shaft 20 through a differential gear comprising pinions 22, 23 and a free bevel pinion 24 mounted on a block 25 on the shaft 20. The pinion 23 is integral with a pinion 27 while the pinion 22 is mounted on a sleeve carrying a bevel pinion 28 which engages a pinion 29 on a vertical shaft carrying the table 33 and yam breaking mechanism 34. A twist adjustment drum 35 is also provided consisting of two parts one mounted on the shaft 20 and the other rotatably adjustable thereon and secured by a nip screw. Arms 37, 38 project from the two parts of the drum 35 the former co-operating with a stop 39 fixed about the shaft 20 and the latter with an arm pivoted on'a support 40 and having a retaining notch 42 held up by a spring 43 to engage an arm 44. When the handle is rotated the drive is from the gearing 27, 23 and through the bevel 24 as the pinion 22 is held by the arm 44 engaging the catch 42. The shaft 20 rotates however and brings the arm 39 against the. stop 37 which turns the drum 35 and when the pin 38 depresses the pivoted arm the arm 44 and the bevels 22 and 28 are freed and the drive passes thence to the pinion 29 and the wheel 30 and pinions 31. In use the yarns passing through the hollow spindle 16 are laid parallel in the channel 48 and nipped at 47, 47a and the handle is then rotated to untwist the lengths held between the members 17, 47. When the appropriate number of turns have been removed according to the setting of the drum 35 the pin 38 releases the catch 42 and the pinions 31 are rotated thus swinging the horizontal arms 45 and breaking the ends nipped at 47. When the arms 45 reach the end of the outward movement a peg operates to stop the handle and when released the parts are returned to their original positions by spring mechanism the yarn ends in the channel 48 being rotated sufficiently quickly to engage one another and form an even splice. Alternatively the reverse rotation may be obtained by positive rotation of the handle.
