Abstract

853,454. Braiding. WAHL, C. M., WAHL, N. A., WAHL, A. B., and WAHL, T. H., [trading as WAHL BROS.]. Jan. 15, 1957 [Jan. 16, 1956], No. 1474/57. Class 74 (1). [Also in Group XXV] Apparatus, for simultaneously winding, (Group XXV), or braiding two filaments in opposite directions about a mandrel or core from mechanisms which rotate in mutually intersecting paths, has elements rotatable with the driving shafts of the mechanisms and engaging in slots in a block carrying the mandrel, to maintain the spacial position of the mandrel without additional support. In Figs. 1 and 2, a support 31, bearing the mandrel 33 or feeding a core via a passage 36, is carried by a block 30 supported by discs 17, 18 which are carried by the spindles 12, 11 of intermeshing gears 14, 13 and which take into arcuate slots 28, 29 in the block. Filaments 23, 27 are fed from spools 22, 26 carried on posts 21, 25 at the ends of radial arms 20, 24 rotating with the gears. Bights 18, 19 in the discs permit passage of the posts. A rotatable spool 34 of core material may be placed on a stub shaft 35 on the block 30. Counterweights are provided which will balance the machine when half the filament has been used from each spool. In Fig. 5, each gear spindle bears a pair of discs 60, 61 and 62, 63 (not shown) respectively, which together support the mandrel- or core-bearing block 62a. The bights in the discs are staggered and the filament feeds 67, 68 are correspondingly inclined. The filaments 79, 80 are supplied from spools symmetrically positioned in relation to the spindles of the gears, so that the balance of the machine is not affected by consumption of the filament. Relatively large bobbins 120, 121, Fig. 6, may be used, mounted in yokes 116, 117, rotating with the gears, but 90 degrees out of phase with each other, the yokes being coupled to the gear spindles by universal joints 118, 119 and located at their lower ends by stub shafts borne in suitable bearings. A filament tensioning device 122 is provided on each yoke. The entire mechanism of Fig. 7 lies in a plane which is inclined to the vertical and the gear spindles are upwardly convergent. The mandrel block 129 is supported by one disc 131 on spindle 125 and two discs 132, 133 on spindle 126. The inclining of the spindles again permits the use of large bobbins. Tensioning devices 142 are provided.
