Abstract

548,181. Tapping; drilling &c. GROOM & TATTERSALL, Ltd., and SALMONS, J. H. March 26, 1941, No. 4079. [Class 83 (iii)] Taps, drills &c. are driven through a self-aligning device embodying plate-like members connected by two sets of ribs and grooves at right angles. A member f is socketed at f for engagement with a spindle and is provided with a terminal disc b grooved at h to engage a rib i on an intermediate plate e having on its other face a rib at right-angles to the rib i and engaging a groove in a member a with a taper spigot c for mounting a tap-holder &c. The member a forms an oil bath enclosing the self-aligning parts and is fitted with a retaining ring g. Light springs, (not shown), tend to maintain the parts in concentric relation. In a modification the part a carries a bevelclosing chuck for engaging the tap shank and is fitted additionally with floating jaws for engaging and driving the squared end of the tap.
