Abstract
693,896. Chucks; drilling. FLORY, T. W. Jan. 25, 1951 [Nov. 8, 1949], No. 28584/49. Class 83 (iii). A holder, for a rotary tool comprises a driven, member 8 supported by a driving member 2 so as to be free to float in any radial direction, and a tool guide, 13 mounted on the driving- member 2 to be reciprocable with respect to the tool and formed at its outer end to engage the work so as to be steadied thereby. A drilling or reaming tool 18 is secured in the freely mounted block 8 by a screw 21 engaging an inclined groove 23 in a shank 19. Drive is transmitted to the block by four pins 14 engaging oversize holes. The drill passes through a guide 24 bearing the horns 13 for positioning the holder on a bar. The guide is pressed outwardly by a spring 10. A spring 32 urges the drill outwardly. The parts are positioned relatively to one another before operation by slackening the screw 21 and pushing the holder against the work. When a mark 35 is level with the edge of a sleeve 6, the screw 21 is tightened. This ensures that the horns 13 straddle the work correctly before drilling commences. Swarf ejection holes 27 are provide d. In a modification, the block 46, Fig. 5, is driven by two radial pins 47 and the front 37 of the holder is coned to position the device over the ends of bars &c.
