Abstract

548,126. Making electric components. CREED & CO., Ltd. July 26, 1941, No. 9518. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1940. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] Cutting by spark discharge.-A stylus for scanning a recording medium and applying thereto electric marking currents is made by producing a core 12b of relatively soft conducting material such as iron, steel, bronze and beryllium copper, and coating it with refractory conducting material such as chromium, rhodium, tungsten and molybdenum. The end of the stylus is formed with a cavity c by passing an alternating current between the end 12c and an opposed electrode. During use the cavity tends to be preserved and if alternating current be used in recording the cavity need not be preformed. The outer layer may first be formed and then filled with the core material or the core may be first formed and the outer layer applied by means such as electrodeposition. In a preferred form the core is of steel piano wire and the outer layer is of chromium. The core diameter may be from 8 to 10 mils and the outer layer may be 1 mil thick, and the stylus is particularly for use in a telegraph system.
