Abstract

1,113,750. Spark gaps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 2 Nov., 1966 [3 Dec., 1965], No. 49136/66. Heading H1X. An electrode arrangement in an electrohydraulic system comprises an elongated anode 40 and a cathode 30, driving means 23 connected to said anode for maintaining the interelectrode gap substantially constant during use, and means 46 connecting the anode 40 to a high-voltage source and connecting the cathode 30 to ground. The anode and cathode may be made of aluminium, stainless steel, iron, brass, copper, or alloys thereof, and the anode has a coating 42 of glass-epoxy materials or resinglasses designed to erode at the same rate as the metal core. The cathode 30 is a threaded cup providing arcuate arcing surfaces 31. Alternatively cathode arcing surfaces may be provided on prong-like extensions of the metal casing 28. The arrangement is supported by tie-rods 16 from a plate (17) (Fig. 1, not shown) on the top of a liquid-filled tank (10) and the rod 23 is connected to a gear-box (22) and motor (20). Casing 28 and insulator 44 have a slot 48 to allow movement of coaxial cable 46 with the anode 40.
