Abstract
974,419. Metal vapour discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 24, 1961 [April 26, 1960], No. 14722/61. Heading H1D. An electric discharge device comprises a liquid cathode, an anode supported and insulated from an envelope which is in contact with the cathode and acts as the cathode connection so that stray magnetic fields originating from external sources which seriously impair the efficient operation of the device are counteracted by the uniform magnetic field set up inside the envelope by the current flowing therethrough. The envelope consists of coaxial cylinders 3, 4 of high resistance ferrous material having a resistivity of between 7-20 micro. ohm cm., and adapted for cooling by a fluid passing in at 7 and out at 8. The anode 11, energized by cable 12, is mounted coaxially with respect to the envelope 2 by spacer 5, and the discharge may be initiated by any well-known method, such as an excitation electrode 13 in contact with the cathode 10.
