Abstract
547,219. Combing machines. NASMITH, J. W. Nov. 15, 1940, No. 16527. [Class 120 (i)] In a combing machine as described in Specification 472,904, having a pair of piecing rollers P, P<SP>1</SP> of which the lower roller P slides to-and-fro from the combing cylinder position and a pair of aprons which engage and control movement of a returned end of fibre fleece, the pair of aprons comprises an upper apron L<SP>1</SP> passing around the lower piecing roller and taking part bodily in its sliding movement, and a lower apron L the operative upper surface of which is extended and contracted so that uniformity of co-operative movement of the contiguous apron faces is preserved. Each of the aprons passes around a coarsely fluted and slidable roller 2, 4, the rollers engaging lightly through the material of the aprons, and the roller 4 is given rotary motion alternately in each direction and is mounted for sliding movement with the lower piecing roller P. The apron L passes also around a fixed, but adjustable roller 1. The upper and free face of the upper apron L<SP>1</SP> is of sufficient length to receive and allow an end of the fibre fleece to lie upon it after piecing until a succession of fibre tufts have been added to it before being passed forward to be formed into a sliver. The static electric charges held by the fibres are thus dissipated before the continuous length of combed fleece is released to be formed into a sliver.
