Abstract

547,132. Gas burners. GRIGGS, A. R. March 4, 1941, No. 2931. [Class 75 (i)] Burners for burning producer gas, petrol-air gas, or other carburetted air mixtures of low hydrogen content are fitted with shields to provide a short chamber or space in which combustion is initiated and a slight baffling effect is produced to stabilize the flame. Fig. 1 shows an open ended pipe injector burner a fitted with a shield c having an internal lip c' to baffle slightly the emerging flame. The shield c is preferably lined with a thin wall d of refractory fire cement. Figs. 4 and 6 show perforated tube burners a fitted with metal strips c having inwardly inclined lips c'. Fig. 9 shows a burner head a having a cap or plug formed with a number of small orifices or channels discharging into a conical shield c having an inwardly inclined lip c'. A cone e of refractory material or a gauze disc f may be provided to diffuse the gas. Alternatively the shield may be cylindrical and provided with an internal flange a small distance from its outer end. When applied to a ring burner head having circumferentially arranged ports the shield consists of a shallow .annular cup having an inturned lip.
