Abstract

547,123. Piezo-electric crystals. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 26, 1941, No. 9517. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1940. [Class 40 (v)] A quartz crystal element 1 is designed to have a low temperature coefficient in a flexure mode frequency dependent mainly on the length and width of its major surfaces, by having the length dimension L at an angle # of between 0 degrees and 10 degrees to the Y axis of the crystal, the major surface inclined at an angle # between 30 degrees and 75 degrees to the YZ plane and the ratio of width W to length between .05 and .95. Graphs are given relating W and L to fre. quency to enable the optimum values for a given frequency. Each major surface is provided with electrode coatings 3, 4 having lugs 5 arranged at nodes for clamping on the attachment of leads. Adjacent coatings are energized in opposite polarity to cause flexure mode oscillation. The crystal may be mounted between spring urged pins of gold-plated brass, or by fine wire conductors soldered on to the points 5, and enclosed in an evacuated envelope. The mountings described in Specifications 239,175, [Class 40 (v)], and 467,724 may be used.
