Abstract

544,834. Piezo electric crystals. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 14, 1941, No. 3491. Convention date, March 29, 1940. [Class 40 (v)] A quartz crystal plate 1 adapted to have a low temperature coefficient in a longitudinal mode is cut from the mother crystal such that its length L is substantially in the YZ plane and is inclined from 0 degrees to 10 degrees to the Y axis, its major surfaces are inclined from 30 degrees to 48 degrees to the YZ plane, and the ratio of length L to width W lies between .25 and .85. Curves are given to show how a low temperature coefficient crystal can be chosen from this range to provide desired frequencies. Fig. 4 shows a holder for a crystal plate 1 having four electrodes deposited on its surfaces. The crystal is clamped between four screws 25, 26 the screws 25 being biased by springs 27 carried by the insulating supporting block 10. The screws 25, 26 also serve for the connection of leads the other ends of which are attached to contact pins 12 carried by the base 13 of the evacuated metal bulb 11. The assembly is resiliently mounted on phosphor bronze springs 30, 31. Other methods of mounting the crystal may be used. Specifications 533,731 and 540,184 are referred to.
