Abstract

552,835. Piezo-electric crystals. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. March 27, 1942, No. 4070. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1940. [Class 40 (v), A rectangular quartz crystal 1 of length L and width W is arranged for longitudinal vibration in the nth harmonic of the applied frequency by the provision of n pairs of oppositely arranged electrodes 3, 4 of length l where L = n l. The major faces are parallel to an X axis of the mother crystal and inclined at an angle ° to the Z axis in the range 44 to 51 degrees, while the dimensions L and W are at 45 degrees to the X axis and the ratio eM is in the range 311 to 314, the precise values of the angle ° and the dimensional ratio being chosen to give a small temperature coefficient of frequency. The electrodes may be comprised of interconnected foils extending only over one edge of the,crystal, Fig.5 (not shown) thus leaving the other edges free to be ground for frequency correction. Also a small series condenser having an opposite temperature coefficient may be used to correct frequency deviations due to temperature. The crystal may be held between conducting clamps at central points 6 or held by attached spring wires. Specifications 479,979, 510,379, 533,731 are referred to.
