Abstract

545,545. Making composite structural articles. DRUMMOND, F. E., and BENCH, D. E. May 20, 1941, No. 6459. Convention date, Dec. 20, 1940. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A composite structural article having a surface member and an inner or backing member is made by electropolishing the surface member and then bringing it into contact with the backing while interlocking and shaping the members. A strip 10 of stainless steel, e.g. 18 per cent of chromium and 8 of nickel, may be fed through a cold or steam &c. heated bath 12 containing phosphoric, sulphuric, or other acid-electrolyte and guided by glass rods 28 between copper or brass bristle anode members 26 contacting the strip, and a copper or lead anode 22 spaced therefrom, then through a rinsing bath 15 and drying chamber and, together with a strip 38 of mild steel, aluminium, or magnesium alloy steel, through rolls 40 to form and interlock the composite strip as shown in Fig. 4. If necessary, the strip may then pass through buffing wheels 42. In place of metal the backing may comprise wood, rubber, or synthetic plastic material. The electro-polishing step may also be used in treating wire, sheet, spun shapes and castings.
