544,013. Diaphragm pumps; valves. BATES, E. B. Sept. 23, 1940, No. 14474. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A manually-operable double-acting diaphragm pump comprises an inlet chamber 13 communicating by conduits 16a, 16b and rubber flap valves 17a, 17b with alternately acting upper and lower pump chambers 12a, 12b formed by a pair of rubber diaphragms 11a, 11b, which may be integral, with a metal insert 22 to receive the end of an operating lever. The pump chambers 12a, 12b communicate by conduits 16a<SP>1</SP>, 16b<SP>1</SP> and opposing orifices 61a, 61b, with an outlet valve chamber 14 having one or more delivery outlets and fitted with a single pressure or suction operated rubber valve device which opens each orifice in turn whilst closing the other. This valve device comprises parallel flanges 19a, 19b connected by a strut 19c and it may be movable bodily like a shuttle, or be 'under slight compression. The pump casing may be made from three blocks 10a, 10b, 10c of wood, which has been treated to make it non-absorbent of water and rot-resisting, and which are clamped to wooden battens 27 by means of unequally spaced bolts 33. All wooden parts of the pump which are exposed to fluid may be lined with rubber. In one modification the diaphragms are constituted by separate rubber sheets sandwiched between metal washers and connected by a metal operating strut. In another modification, the two pump chambers are separated by a single diaphragm which is flexed by means extending through one of the chambers.
