Abstract

543,138. Variable feed pumps. DODSON, E. Feb. 25, 1941, No. 2565. [Class 102 (i)] A variable feed fuel-injection or other pump for delivering accurately measured quantities of liquid, comprises a sealed chamber 2 containing a viscous liquid such as oil and communicating with inlet ports 14 in a barrel 4 having outlet ports 13 communicating with an intermediate chamber 3, a plunger 5 reciprocating in the barrel 4 to deliver the viscous liquid from the sealed chamber 2 to the intermediate chamber 3, a diaphragm 16 or the like constituting an elastic wall common to the intermediate chamber 3 and a pump chamber 17 containing the liquid to be pumped, and means for varying the relative positions of the inlet ports 14 and the plunger 5 so as to control the effective stroke of the plunger and therefore the feed of the pump. The viscous liquid is maintained under some pressure, and leakage losses compensated, by means of an elastic wall 11 loaded by a spring 12. The pressure in the pump chamber 17, which may be assisted by a spring 24, exceeds that exerted by the elastic wall 11 and holds the diaphragm 16 against a stop 25 at the end of the suction stroke of the plunger. The intermediate chamber 3 contains a supplementary piston 32 exposed at its outer end to the adjustable pressure of a spring 34 and also, by means of a passage 33, to the pressure in the sealed chamber 2. The head of the plunger 5 is formed with an oblique groove 26 constituting a release passage for enabling a portion of the viscous liquid to spill back through the inlet ports 14 on each delivery stroke of the plunger 5, and this spill back, and therefore the effective stroke of the plunger, is adjusted by rotating the plunger relative to the barrel. For this purpose the upper end of the plunger is formed with a pair of transversely projecting lugs 27 which engage in vertical slots 28 in a sleeve 29 formed with gear teeth 30 which engage a longitudinally adjustable rack 31.
