Abstract
543,099. Gas-purifying materials. QUARENDON, R., FORTY, R., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 7, 1940, No. 12682. [Class 55 (ii)] Hydrogen sulphide is removed from water gas, coke oven gas, and the like by passage of the gas through a purification mass, such as peat, containing sulphur bacteria, in admixture with ferric oxide and/or spent oxide, the ammonia content of the water gas and the like being at least 0.03 per cent, and that of the coke oven gas and the like at least 0.05 per cent. The oxygen content of the gases from which the hydrogen sulphide is to be removed should be maintained at at least twice that stoichiometrically equivalent to the hydrogen sulphide content. There may be used as an alternative to peat inert material such as ashes, granulated slag, coke, broken brick, or pumice which have been inoculated with cultures of sulphur bacteria.
